2022 Toyota Camry vs. 2022 Honda Accord: Battle of the Age-long Rivals

2022 Toyota Camry vs. 2022 Honda Accord

The 2022 Toyota Camry and the 2022 Honda Accord are excellent midsize sedans with a rivalry that goes back decades. Both cars were redesigned in 2018 and feature upmarket cabins, comfortable seats, and great driving dynamics. But which one is better? Let’s take a closer look at what each car has to offer.

2022 Toyota Camry vs. 2022 Honda Accord: Whatโ€™s New for the Cars?

The 2022 Toyota Camry and 2022 Honda Accord were redesigned in 2018 for the eighth and tenth generations, respectively. Both were touched up with a few cosmetic changes last year, but there are no major changes for 2022.

Performance: The 2022 Camryโ€™s V6 Engine Gives It the Edge

2022-Toyota-Camry-V6-Engine

The 2022 Toyota Camry comes with a standard 203-horsepower four-cylinder engine, while the Accord’s base engine is a 192-horsepower turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder. But that doesn’t tell the full story, as the Accord manages to go from zero to 60mph in 7.2 seconds compared to the Camry’s 7.4 seconds, according to TopSpeed.

Both cars offer optional engines. The Accord gets a slightly bigger 2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that puts out 252 horsepower for the Sport 2.0T and Touring trims. On the other hand, the Camry absolutely blows the competition away with a significantly more powerful naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 that makes 301 horsepower.

Whichever Camry trim you choose, you get a slick-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission with front-wheel drive as standard (although all-wheel drive is available). Meanwhile, the Accord’s 1.5-liter turbocharged engine is mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission, while the larger 2-liter four-cylinder is paired with a refined 10-speed automatic. The Accord doesnโ€™t offer AWD, though.

The 2022 Toyota Camry’s V-six is the clear winner in performance, but the Accord’s turbocharged four-cylinder engines are nothing to scoff at.

Fuel Economy: The 2022 Accord Has Better Mileage, but Only Slightly

The 2022 Honda Accord has the edge over the Camry, but only slightly when it comes to fuel economy. The base Accord gets an EPA-rated 30/33 mpg for city and combined mileage compared to the Camry’s 28/32 mpg. However, the Camry does better on the highway, managing 39 mpg versus the Accords 38.

Comparing the 2022 Toyota Camry’s V6 engine to the Accord’s 2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder yields different results. Both cars have the same city and combined values of 22/26 mpg, but the Camry edges out the win on the highway with its rating of 33 mpg compared to the Accord’s 32.

Interior Quality and Comfort: Easy Win for the 2022 Accordโ€™s Upscale Build

Both models include comfortable seats and come standard with cloth upholstery. Synthetic leather and genuine leather are options alongside niceties such as heated and ventilated seats. However, the Accordโ€™s interior is a step above what many sedans in this category offer, including the Camry. Itโ€™s quiet, modern, and mostly constructed with quality, soft-touch materials.

The Camry’s cabin is not bad by any means, but you’ll quickly find that not as upscale as its rivals. While higher trims try to bridge this gap in material quality, the effort dips notably as you move down the trim ladder โ€” the lower trims have more hard plastic surfaces than other mid-size sedans. Even then, the Camry is relatively noisy regardless of trim.

Cabin and Cargo Space: Cabins Are Similar, but the Accord Gets the Nod for a Larger Trunk

The 2022 Camry and Accord can accommodate up to five people, with enough head and legroom for the vast majority of passengers. However, the Accord has greater passenger volume overall and larger interior dimensions than the Camry.

While the cabins of both cars have very similar dimensions, the cargo space is a different matter. The 2022 Camry trunk’s 15.1 cu. ft. is considerably less than the 2022 Accord, which boasts an impressive 16.7 cu. ft. in trunk volume. That said, both cars come standard with folding rear seats to bump up the cargo space.

Interior Technology: Both Cars Are Stacked, but the Camry Offers More for Less

The 2022 Camry and Accord boast up-to-date infotainment systems, standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support. The Accord has a standard 8-inch touch screen compared to the Camry’s smaller 7-inch display. However, the Camry offers an available 9-inch touch screen.

The Camry takes things a step further by including Amazon Alexa support, satellite radio, and Wi-Fi hot spot as standard, with wireless device charging as an option.

The Accord, on the other hand, lacks Amazon Alexa and requires you to upgrade to get satellite radio, Wi-Fi hotspot, and wireless device charging. It does have wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as options, though.

Pricing: Costlier Than the Average Mid Size Sedan but the Camryโ€™s Cheaper

The 2022 Camry starts at $25,845 for the base LE trim, which is slightly above average for a midsize car. Add AWD, and the price goes up an extra $1,400. In comparison, the 2022 Accord has a higher starting cost of $26,520.

Both cars have several other trims to choose from, with prices exceeding $30,000. The Camry’s optional V6-toting XLE and XSE models will set you back more than $35,000, but the performance-oriented TRD model starts at $32,910, making it the cheapest V6 of the bunch.

However, none of the Camry models costs as much as the Accord’s range-topping Touring trim, which will set you back a couple of thousands more with a starting price of $38,450.

2022 Toyota Camry vs. 2022 Honda Accord: Which One Is Right for You?

The 2022 Toyota Camry and the 2022 Honda Accord are both great cars, but they have some clear differences. The Camry is the better choice if you’re looking for a more powerful engine and more interior technology on lower trims for a relatively lower price. But if you’re looking for a quieter cabin, a more comfy interior, and larger cargo space, the Accord is the way to go. Whichever car you choose, you’re sure to be happy with your decision.

You Should Choose the Toyota Camry Ifโ€ฆ

  • You desire more power behind the wheel.
  • You want a base trim that’s packed with the latest tech features.
  • You are on a tight budget.

You Should Choose the Honda Accord Ifโ€ฆ

  • You want a more luxurious interior with upscale materials.
  • You need that extra space for cargo.
  • You donโ€™t mind the extra cost.

Donโ€™t Buy either Ifโ€ฆ

  • You need more than five seats โ€” you should get an SUV or minivan.
  • You frequently drive off-road โ€” rugged SUVs are the better choice.
  • You donโ€™t want to spend more than $30,000 on a vehicle. In that case, you should check out the 2022 Toyota Corolla or 2022 Honda Civic.
